EXCLUSIVE — Virginia GOP candidate John Reid, who is running for lieutenant governor, released a new policy plan on Wednesday that will expand access to child care for parents while reducing government spending and bolstering resources for home-based and faith-based providers.

“What I’m trying to do, especially here in the summertime, is not just talk to people, but listen to people,” Reid told 29News. “Not just the political people, but the average person who may not be paying attention to politics right now and find out what’s on their mind.”

Reid sat down with WHSV’s Caleb Peek for a discussion about Reid’s life, background and beliefs — including his time as an intern for former President Ronald Reagan, his eight-year stint as a talk show host on WRVA radio and his 10-debate challenge for Ghazala Hashmi, his opponent in the race.

John Reid said former Virginia governor Douglas Wilder gave him a piece of advice back when Reid was mulling a run for lieutenant governor, advice that has become the centerpiece of his campaign strategy. “He said, ‘People want to be heard and they wanna know that you’re willing to put in the work personally to go meet with them,’” Reid told Cville Right Now on Monday. “His advice to me was to get in the car and go talk to people, and that’s what I’m doing.”
