Henrico, Va. — Today, Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor John Reid rolled out a conservative plan to lower the cost of childcare for working families, delivering relief without expanding Richmond’s reach.
Reid’s proposal builds on a shared understanding that Virginia families are being crushed by the cost of childcare but sharply diverges from the approach pushed by Abigail Spanberger and Democrats in Richmond. While they call for more government programs, more spending, and more bureaucracy, Reid’s plan puts parents in charge, empowers communities, and keeps government in check.
“Abigail is right to say we have a childcare crisis, but her solution is more of the same: Richmond-style spending and top-down mandates,” said John Reid. “Virginia doesn’t need a bigger bureaucracy. We need a better way.”
The Reid Plan includes:
Expanding state childcare tax credits so parents can keep more of what they earn and make their own decisions about care
Incentives for employer-sponsored childcare, including on-site centers and childcare stipends
Investing in community-based childcare networks including in-home providers, faith-based programs, and local nonprofits that serve rural and underserved areas
Public-private partnerships to convert underused properties, like vacant schools or churches, into childcare facilities tailored to local needs
Streamlining licensing and zoning rules to make it easier for small providers to open and operate legally
Expanding vocational and trade-based education pathways for childcare workers, reducing reliance on costly four-year degrees
Reid’s plan rejects one-size-fits-all mandates in favor of affordability, flexibility, and parental choice.
“Parents, not politicians, know what’s best for their kids,” continued John Reid. “Any time Democrats want to come to the table to make easier for Virginia families, I’m going to work with them. But we can lower costs, expand access, and support working families without turning childcare into another government-run industry. Our families need solutions, not a campaign slogan.”
