Richmond, VA — Republican nominee for Lieutenant Governor, John Reid, issued the following statement in response to Ghazala Hashmi’s victory in the Democratic primary:
“I want to congratulate Ghazala Hashmi on her victory and welcome her to the actual campaign trail.
I suspect soon she will hear what I have been hearing for months - that almost everything wrong in modern Virginia is a result of the political overreach, and social justice warrior radicalism of her party. And Senator Hashmi - sadly - has been one of the biggest cheerleaders for the high taxes, anti-business, trans radicalism, and government-knows-better-than-parents attitude that’s crushing our families and endangering our future.
Virginia Democrats used to be grounded in a basic appreciation of business principles and a basic respect for individual choices. But something has gone wrong and many of the bad bills and laws that have made us less safe in our homes and less stable as a society came under her leadership.
I left my job to run so that I could bring reasonable and responsible and fair-minded leadership to the state Capitol.
We don’t need Republicans or Democrats pompously telling you what to do - I think most Virginians want to be free to pick their jobs without being forced into a union, make their own decisions about how the live and raise their own kids as they see fit.
I think you just want to know that the people at the Capitol are treating you fairly and making sure you have opportunities to be prosperous on your own terms.
You may have heard - I’m a new kind of Republican leader. Rooted in proven and successful business and government principles but also committed to your personal freedom.
I look forward to continuing to visit with and LISTEN to the people of Virginia as I travel across the state.
And I will welcome the chance to discuss the future and debate the issues with Senator Hashmi in the coming months.”
