Reid to Hold Press Conference: Parents, Parental Rights, and Political Retaliation in Virginia’s Education System

Featuring Lt. Governor Candidate John Reid and Former Virginia Board of Education Member Suparna Dutta

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 30, 2025

HENRICO, Va. – Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor John Reid will join Suparna Dutta, the Fairfax County mother and former member of the Virginia Board of Education who was removed by Senate Democrats after challenging ideological groupthink and standing up for the Constitution, parental rights, and academic freedom.

The two will discuss the growing hostility toward parents and reform-minded voices in Virginia’s education system — and the disturbing trend of labeling dissenting minorities as “racist” or “extremist” simply for disagreeing with the left’s political orthodoxy.

“Suparna Dutta’s story is exactly what’s wrong with the political culture in Richmond, where Democrats preach diversity but punish anyone who thinks differently,” said John Reid. “What Ghazala Hashmi fundamentally fails to understand is that every parent, every teacher, every Virginian who cares about their kids deserves a voice, not a label. We’re going to bring common sense and courage back to education.”

This press conference will also highlight the contrast between John Reid’s Real Virginia Agenda for Education — focused on empowering parents, protecting students from political indoctrination, and restoring excellence — and the left’s culture of censorship and retaliation.

BACKGROUND:

  • In 2022, Governor Glenn Youngkin appointed Suparna Dutta to the Virginia Board of Education, recognizing her as a strong advocate for parental rights and high academic standards.

  • In 2023, Senate Democrats led by Sen. Ghazala Hashmi voted to remove Dutta from the board, accusing her, without evidence, of “aligning with white supremacist groups.”

  • Dutta had recently challenged fellow board member Anne Holton, wife of Sen. Tim Kaine, over comments on socialism and constitutional principles, and voted to adopt Gov. Youngkin’s new history Standards of Learning.

  • Dutta has since spoken publicly about the anti-parent sentiment in Virginia’s education establishment and warned that dissenting minority voices are being silenced.
