John Reid Rolls Out Next Item in the Real Virginia Agenda Focused on First Responders

Comprehensive Plan to Recruit, Retain, and Respect Virginia’s First Responders

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

August 15, 2025

HEINRICO, Va. — Republican candidate for Lieutenant Governor John Reid today unveiled the next pillar of his Real Virginia Agenda a focused, commonsense plan to support the law enforcement officers, firefighters, EMTs, and emergency dispatchers who put their lives on the line every day.

“Some people run toward danger. Others run away from it. Virginia’s first responders have never hesitated, and they shouldn’t have to wonder if their Commonwealth has their back,” Reid said. “This isn’t about slogans. It’s about substance because if we want strong communities, we need to invest in the people who keep them safe.”

The plan, Supporting Those Who Serve, lays out four key priorities:

1. Recruitment That Works: Launch a statewide First Responder Workforce Grant Program, expand high school-to-service career pathways, and streamline veteran transitions into public safety roles.

2. Retain and Reward: Create a First Responder Retention Tax Credit and reward departments that keep experienced personnel and maintain strong public trust.

3. Train for the Real World: Expand regional training academies and modernize instruction with real-world, scenario-based skills in mental health response, de-escalation, search and rescue, and advanced emergency care.

4. Respect the Risk: Protect qualified immunity, expand access to mental health support, and ensure every first responder knows Virginia stands behind them.

“This job isn’t easy, and it’s not getting easier,” Reid said. “I will always stand with our first responders not just in good times, but when it’s hard. Not just when it’s popular, but when it’s right. If you serve Virginia, Virginia should serve you. That’s the promise I’m making, and that’s the standard I’ll bring with me to Richmond.”
